A few words from the artist:

It has always been a struggle for me to stop judging my art, my approach, and the finished piece. Over the years I have managed to let go of the things that get in the way of holding my attention as I paint so I can go deeper and become more accessible. I submit to the work like a child playing pretend telling myself that no one is watching and in my world nothing is impossible. My years as an actor blessed me with an amazing teacher, coach, and friend. She taught me many valuable lessons that I have brought into my approach as an artist. Each time I put my brush to the canvas I remember her telling us to fall in love with the story we are trying to tell, accept it as true, accept the images and do not try to figure them out. That is exactly what I do as I begin to paint and suddenly I am feeling and speaking with my art at the same time. It’s more exciting that way. We have fundamental needs, hunger, hope, love, anger, acceptance and so on. I set out to express these needs in my work as I paint. It is all about the images there as I free myself and journey into my imagination like a child  flying with ease in the back yard when everyone says that I can"t.

Gary Paterson

Gary builds his canvases the way walls are built - block upon cinder block, covering the painting’s surface. Color control is important - many pieces need thirty unique colors, much as he tries for simplicity.
